How You Can Avoid Future Data Disasters
Data runs today’s world. Over the years, data has become just as valuable as money. When dealing with clients, losing and abusing data costs you more than just money. What’s stopping a thief from swiping your computer from your bag at the coffee shop? What happens if you accidentally delete ten hours of work?
Today presents multiple sophisticated solutions for data loss. Though not everyone utilizes, or even knows about these solutions. In this article, we will give you the tools to keep your data safe and secure.
Only Trust Your Own Network
A traveling salesman is the modern day warrior. You may find yourself at hotels, coffee shops, and restaurants. It makes sense to utilize free Wi-Fi whenever you can. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. Public Wi-Fi is rarely secure. You are sharing a network with dozens of people, some looking to snag data.
Don’t connect to public Wi-Fi. Create your own hotspot with a secure password. Being on the road, you can make a reliable hotspot using nothing but your mobile phone. Be sure to enable this through your provider.
Basic Password Security
Your mom’s maiden name isn’t the best password. Neither is your birthday or your grandma’s pet. In fact, any personal phrase is easily cracked with basic research. Practicing password security comes down to using multiple different passwords. Using a tool like LastPass lets you use a unique password for every website without any memorization.
Tools like LastPass generate a secure password for you. If you prefer to go old-school, here are some general guidelines to follow:
- Don’t use words or personal phrases
- Include at least one number, special character, and capital letter
- The longer, the better. Make your password at least 13 characters long
- Use this tool to verify your password (the password you type is only stored locally, no worries!)
Prepare for Theft
We don’t like to think about it, but theft is a serious concern. A thief can swipe your laptop from the table while you’re looking away. You can lose your laptop in a burglary. No matter the case, you want to make sure your data doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.
To do this, back up all of your data into an external hard drive. Store this hard drive where nobody else can find it. Make sure your computer is protected with a solid password. To potentially catch the thief red-handed, you can use laptop tracking software.
